In the lower leagues of Swiss wrestling, the rules allow something most people never expect: women can step onto the mat against men. And sometimes the woman wins.
On this night in Ufhusen, that is exactly what happened to young Lars Berger of RS Sense.
Anja Epp of TV Ufhusen was simply too much for him. Berger fought with everything he had, scoring points and refusing to fold, but Epp’s pressure was relentless.
Early in the bout she already had him on his back, only for them to tumble out of bounds. The referee reset them in the center. The crowd, sensing blood, started chanting her name — “An-ja! An-ja!” — loud enough that it had to rattle him.
Epp struck again. She dumped him hard, flipped him cleanly onto his shoulders, and locked him down. Berger strained, with everything he could muster, legs kicking, face tight with effort… but there was no escape. The referee’s hand slapped the mat for the pin.
Epp kneeled beside her beaten opponent, gave a short, sharp flex, then reached down and patted Berger on the back before they rose together. She had beaten males before and knew this was hard for him. But for Epp, there was nothing like the thrill of pinning a man.
As the referee raised her arm in victory, Lars looked completely crushed — a male wrestler just pinned by a woman in front of a roaring crowd that had been chanting her name the whole time.
